A piece of Dr. Martin Luther King's dream was realized yesterday as a diverse group of about one hundred local community members rallied at the steps of Springfield City Hall to continue King's struggle for social and economic justice. The gathering, held on April 4th, commemorated the assassination of Dr. King in 1968 in Memphis, TN, while helping striking sanitation workers. The Springfield rally was part of "We Are One," a nationwide effort by the national AFL-CIO and other organizations to help build support for workers getting assaulted by right-wing politicians across the country.

Labor Council Dives Into Election Season

The Pioneer Valley AFL-CIO is firing up the after burners and launching into the last two weeks of the mid-term election season. "A core part of our mission is to make sure that the right people, the people who vote in our members best economic interests, win. We're here to support our candidates any way we can," said Richard M. Brown, President of the Pioneer Valley AFL-CIO.

Local area unions are calling on union members to turn out for several upcoming standouts and rallies, including a large rally for the Governor Patrick and Richard Neal being held on Wednesday, October 27th at City Hall in Springfield at 5pm. The labor council is also sponsoring two labor walks for Deval Patrick. During these walks, union members go out into the community for several hours to talk to other labor union members about candidate's positions on issues that affect their jobs and quality of life. The walks will be held at 9am on October 23 and 30th at 9am. If you are interested in participating, please contact the labor council at 413-732-7970.

Unions will also be fighting heavily against Question 3, the ballot measure that would slash the Massachusetts sales tax from 6.25% to 3%. If passed, the cut would cause massive public sector layoffs and devastate the state government's ability to serve the public.
