Pioneer Valley Central Labor Council, AFL-CIO Awards $5,000 in Scholarships

Springfield, MA: The Pioneer Valley Central Labor Council, AFL-CIO (PVCLC) awarded $5000 in scholarships at a luncheon held on Tuesday, July 24, 2018. Eight $500 checks were given to high school seniors who are children of members of unions affiliated with the Central Labor Council and two $500 checks were given to union members who are continuing their education The Pioneer Valley Central Labor Council has over 70 affiliated unions representing over 20,000 working men and women in the Springfield area. Each June the PVCLC provides $500 scholarships to high school seniors and union members who are continuing their education. The scholarships are funded by the sales of advertising blocks in the labor council’s Annual Year Book Program. The ads purchased by the PVCLC’s affiliates, community groups and local businesses help build the scholarship fund. With the generous support of our local community, the council can increase the number of scholarships it gives out each year. This year, the council is celebrating its 56th year supporting our affiliates young scholars. Scholarship applications are available in March of each year through the PVCLC. The program is conducted “in house” using local impartial judges. The applicants are evaluated primarily on a 500-or-more-word essay and secondarily on their high school transcripts and school and community activities. Continuing education students are judged on college transcripts and community activities. The Pioneer Valley Central Labor Council, AFL-CIO is proud of its members and their families and is pleased to offer the scholarship money to help defray the cost of college expenses. The council congratulates all the scholarship winners and wishes them success in all their future academic endeavors!
