Worker Advocates Target Wal-Mart on Health Care Action Day
Submitted by pvaflcio on Sat, 03/06/2004 - 9:38am. Health Care | Wal-Mart[image:96,left,5,5,0]Dozens of college students, community members, seniors, and labor leaders turned out on March 4th to leaflet shoppers at the Mountain Farms Mall with information about Wal-Mart's minimal health care coverage for its employees. According to statistics compiled by the United Food & Commercial Workers (UFCW) union, only about 1/3rd of Wal-Mart employees have any coverage at all.
"Shoppers need to know that low Wal-Mart prices come with a very high social cost," explained Rick Brown, President of the Pioneer Valley AFL-CIO. Brown also serves as a union representative for UFCW Local 1459 in Springfield, the union that represents Stop & Shop workers in the area. The union has a contract with the Stop & Shop grocery chain that provides 100% cost-free health care to its members, full and part-time. "Wal-Mart is setting a very quick pace for the race to the bottom," stated Brown. "As other stores try to compete with [Wal-Mart], it will suck the entire retail industry further and further into a low wage, no benefit hole."
Jon Weissman, President of Branch 46 of the National Association of Letter Carriers and chief organizer of the event, was happy with the success of the local leafletting.
